GURS Fellowship Exchange Program
Overview
The GURS Fellowship Exchange Program gives fellows in GURS-verified programs the opportunity to spend a short educational observership at another GURS-verified program — a chance to see clinical experiences, operative approaches, institutional workflows, or areas of subspecialty expertise not fully represented at their home program.
The program highlights the collaborative nature of the GURS fellowship network and is a tangible educational benefit of GURS verification.
How it works
- Participating programs are listed below with Fellowship Program Director contact information and links to program pages and published case logs.
- During the fellowship year, the fellow and their home Fellowship Program Director decide whether an exchange would meaningfully supplement the fellow’s training.
- If so, the fellow and/or home FPD contacts the host FPD directly, and the two programs coordinate timing, duration, institutional requirements, and logistics. GURS does not assign fellows or manage logistics.
Eligibility
- Open to GURS-verified fellowship programs in good standing only.
- Programs on probation may not send or receive fellows during the probationary period.
- Programs may opt in or out annually.
Duration and scope
- Exchanges are generally 1-2 weeks and observational — no expectation of scrubbing in, providing independent patient care, billing, or clinical duties unless separately approved by the host institution.
Funding and time
- The sending program determines whether the exchange counts as educational time, elective time, PTO, vacation, or another locally defined category.
- GURS does not fund exchanges. Travel, lodging, meals, and other costs are the responsibility of the fellow, home program, and/or participating institutions.
What GURS does — and doesn’t — do
GURS establishes eligibility rules, lists participating programs, and promotes the exchange as a benefit of verification. GURS does not fund exchanges, match fellows to programs, arrange travel or housing, approve leave, manage institutional paperwork, credential fellows, or provide malpractice coverage. Availability at any given program is not guaranteed.
